3.S171 Special Subject: Processing and Properties of Structural Materials

Class Info

Experimental subject that combines online and in-person lectures to discuss materials selection and design using structural materials, casting, deformation processes, welding and joining, non-destructive testing, codes, standards, and life assessment. Presented in modules; repeatable for credit one time with permission of instructor. To be proposed for permanent status as an undergraduate version of 3.371 in 2015-16.

This class has 3.012, and 3.014 as prerequisites.

3.S171 will not be offered this semester. It will be instructed by T. Eagar and A. Slocum.

Lecture occurs 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in 4-145.

18.085 Computational Science and Engineering I

Class Info

Review of linear algebra, applications to networks, structures, and estimation, finite difference and finite element solution of differential equations, Laplace's equation and potential flow, boundary-value problems, Fourier series, discrete Fourier transform, convolution. Frequent use of MATLAB in a wide range of scientific and engineering applications.

This class has 18.02, 18.03, and 18.032 as prerequisites.

18.085 will be offered this semester (Fall 2017). It is instructed by G. Strang.

Lecture occurs 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays in 4-270.

18.089 Review of Mathematics

Class Info

One-week review of one-variable calculus (18.01), followed by concentrated study covering multivariable calculus (18.02), two hours per day for five weeks. Primarily for graduate students in Course 2N. Degree credit allowed only in special circumstances.

This class has no prerequisites.

18.089 will not be offered this semester. It will be available in the Summer semester.
